Our curriculum offer for Key Stage 4 and Sixth Form has been carefully designed working closely with our employer partners and local outstanding educational institutions, the University of Exeter and South Devon College. It reflects the GCSE and A-level offer available in schools, also including vocational programmes in Engineering and Applied Science.
The curriculum at South Devon UTC is designed for our vision of producing young people who are ready to take on roles in the engineering, water and environmental sectors. As a non-selective school, we offer every student a challenging and achievable personal programme of study. Students are streamed according to ability and career aspirations.
As well as classroom delivery, students get to develop practical skills in our eight engineering workshops and seven science labs. The whole curriculum comes to life working with local employers, on Challenge Projects, and through work experience placements which happen all year round.
Our employers believe that at Key Stage 4 the curriculum should be broad and include both Science and Engineering. In the Sixth Form, students have the chance to specialise in either Science or Engineering subjects.
Within the Sixth Form, both the Challenge and Extended Projects are based around students’ particular interests and choice of further study. Examples could be particular environmental topics that assist in students’ applications in this sector, either to enter University or begin apprenticeships.
The curriculum framework is currently under review by the government and over the next few years we should see some more opportunities for study in the Engineering, Science and Environmental sectors. We will be offering these for study as and when they become available. We will update our website with all the latest developments.
