Consultation to explore increasing the age range of students studying at SDUTC
South Devon UTC opened in September 2015 in Newton Abbot. The UTC is projected to grow steadily towards a DFE agreed total pupil number of 480 students in 2021. South Devon UTC was the first UTC to open in an area that is not a city or large industrial centre. Much work was done initially in the early project phase to establish the need in the local area.
Currently SDUTC admits students into year 10 and year 12. To reach a sustainable total of 480 students this would require 120 in each year group. The maximum number recruited into one-year group so far has been 72 for year 10 entry 2017.
This proposal sets out to consult on the UTC admitting students into year 9 from September 2020. This would be managed in a transitional manner as follows:
a) September 2019 Admission into year 9 and year 10, PAN to be adjusted for each year group to 80 (from 100).
b) September 2020 Admission into year 9 as a single point of entry for KS4 at the UTC.
The rationale behind consulting on this change is as follows:
a) The UTC wish to provide a skills based curriculum in year 9 which will support the study of more technical options at KS4.
b) Students who wish to study technical subjects are more likely to have an unconventional set of skills in English Language and Literature, this manifests itself as lower reading ages and a higher prevalence of dyslexia. The UTC has developed support for this, to enable this to embed itself to assist students with their performance at GCSE, introducing a bespoke English Language and Literature Skills based curriculum in year 9 will be valuable.
c) In terms of the region sustaining an atypical entry school, having 5 year groups with a total in the region of 450-500 is more achievable than 4 year groups with the same total.
d) The other local atypical entry school already recruits into year 9. (Atrium Studio School).
e) There is significant local demand for extra education places that can be met within the current provision of schools in Newton Abbot if the UTC plays its part in recruiting into year 9.
