Choosing to change schools or college can be daunting, especially if you’re not completely sure what you want to do career wise in the future. South Devon UTC specialises in Engineering, Science and the Environment but we also offer a different approach to education, with smaller class sizes, all year-round work experience, strong links with employers in a wide range of industries, behaviour expectations based on what would be acceptable in the work-place, employability skills and a mature learning environment.
We also have a highly skilled and empathetic inclusion team to help our learners who experience a range of challenges and barriers to their learning, from anxiety and depression to autism and medical conditions. We also have a specialist dyslexia support worker as we have a high proportion of dyslexic students who often tend to have a natural aptitude for engineering. Plus, all our staff have received extensive training in working with dyslexic students, students with mental health concerns and we really embrace all learners, appreciating their differences and valuing them as individuals. All our staff are dedicated to the education and development of our students, compassionate, committed to their own personal development and also have a great sense of humour. We want students to feel comfortable and enjoy coming to South Devon UTC every day.
There is a fantastic sense of community at South Devon UTC and the students have a significant input into how we operate and develop. There are opportunities for representing fellow students at weekly Student Board meetings, assisting fellow students as Peer Mentors, representing South Devon UTC at a range of events as Ambassadors or as Lead Ambassadors you can also help coordinate these events. There are also other leadership roles available, such as Lead Engineer and Lead Scientist, and a Diversity Group to ensure everyone gets an equal voice and to better understand the challenges that some people face.
As a newly built college, opening in January 2016, we have the benefit of all our classrooms, laboratories and workshops being in the same building and having the latest equipment, machinery and resources to advance your learning. We have a lecture theatre and boardroom that add another dynamic to the learning opportunities at the college along with PC suites and an impressive Challenge Arena for sporting activities and events. There are several open learning hubs for personal study time, group work and working with external organisations, such as our employer partners or the military. We have got a garden at the rear of the college, a hard-standing multi-use sports pitch and balconies for added outside space. We also have a Café on site to provide meals, drinks and healthy snacks from breakfast through to lunch.
The facilities, environment, approach to learning, employability skills development, work experience and employer links as well as further education support and guidance means that regardless of your future plans, or lack of them, South Devon UTC can offer you an inspiring education where you can gain professional, technical qualifications alongside valuable life skills and experiences. Whether you are committed to a future in engineering or science or decide that your career path lies down another route then you will have given yourself a great educational foundation to build on and enhanced your personal development.
