James Trout, Laboratory Manager and Registered Scientist at the Environment Agency and Chair of Governors at SDUTC, explains why the Environment Agency was so keen to come on board:
“Working for the Environment Agency and a Fellow of the Institute of Science and Technology, I have first-hand experience in these fields and know what it takes to be work-ready. South Devon UTC has a unique offer that will develop your education and kick-start your career by learning in an employer-focused environment, using state-of-the-art equipment in a professional setting.”
During the last three years, it has been widely reported that the South West is experiencing a shortage of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) skills. “It is well known that as a country, we need to attract more people into science, technology, engineering and maths subjects” said James. “We also need better qualified technicians and engineers moving into the professional workforce. That is why I am very proud to Chair a board of Governors made up of key stakeholders from significant local and national organisations at South Devon UTC. We all share a passion for developing and supporting the next generation of the UK’s technical workforce.”
James continued: “At the Environment Agency, our mission is to protect our environment and create a better place for people and wildlife. To do this, we need not only technically qualified team members but also to work in partnership with other highly technical organisations around the UK. I look forward to welcoming even more prospective environmentalists to South Devon UTC in the coming months.”
